But does cold water immersion (CWI) actually speed recovery, and if so, how cold and how long? A 2025 network meta-analysis in Frontiers in Physiology pooled 55 randomized controlled trials to find out.

What the Meta-Analysis Found

Reviewing studies published between 2000 and 2024, researchers compared different CWI "doses" — combinations of water temperature and immersion duration — against markers of exercise-induced muscle damage: creatine kinase (CK, a blood marker of muscle fiber damage), delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and jump performance as a proxy for neuromuscular recovery. Medium-duration, low-temperature immersion (roughly 10-15 minutes at 5-10°C) came out as the most effective protocol for both blunting the CK rise and restoring jump performance after damaging exercise. Shorter or warmer protocols showed weaker effects, and very long or very cold immersion did not add further benefit.
