CBD for Post-Exercise Recovery: What Recent Trials Show About Muscle Soreness
Cannabidiol (CBD) has moved from niche wellness product to a mainstream post-workout supplement, marketed as an anti-inflammatory recovery aid. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating and permitted under WADA's anti-doping code — but does the evidence support using it for delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)?

Why the results diverge
- Route of administration matters: oral/sublingual CBD reaches systemic circulation and interacts with CB1/CB2 receptors involved in pain and inflammation signaling; topical CBD's ability to penetrate deep enough to affect muscle tissue is less well established.
- Dose and timing vary widely across studies (from single doses to repeated dosing over several days), making it hard to define an optimal protocol.
- Sample sizes are small — most trials involve fewer than 30–40 participants, so findings should be treated as preliminary rather than definitive.
Practical guidance
- If trying CBD for recovery, oral or sublingual isolate/broad-spectrum products have the strongest (though still early) evidence — more than topical gels.
- Competitive athletes should use only third-party certified, THC-free products (e.g., NSF Certified for Sport) — CBD itself is WADA-permitted, but many commercial products contain trace THC that can trigger a positive doping test.
- CBD is not a substitute for the fundamentals of recovery — sleep, protein intake, and training load management still drive the majority of recovery outcomes.
