Sodium Bicarbonate Loading: Does 'Soda Loading' Really Boost High-Intensity Performance?
Sodium bicarbonate loading — sometimes called "soda loading" — is a well-studied ergogenic strategy that uses ordinary baking soda (NaHCO3) to buffer acid build-up during intense exercise. According to the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) position stand published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, the strategy can improve performance in short, high-intensity efforts, but it comes with a real gastrointestinal trade-off that athletes need to plan around.
How buffering helps performance
During high-intensity exercise powered mainly by anaerobic glycolysis, hydrogen ions accumulate in working muscle and blood pH drops, contributing to fatigue. Raising blood bicarbonate concentration increases the pH gradient between muscle and blood, which helps shuttle hydrogen ions and lactate out of the muscle more efficiently. A 2025–2026 randomized controlled trial in elite rugby players using an acute 0.3 g/kg dose taken 90 minutes before a training session found significantly more GI distress in the supplement group with no measurable improvement in jump performance, blood lactate, or perceived exertion — a reminder that "more buffering" does not automatically translate into better real-world performance.
