You started a diet, lost weight steadily for weeks — and then the scale stopped moving. Weight loss plateaus are so universal that they are almost expected, but the explanation is more interesting than "you're eating too much." A large part of the answer lies in NEAT — non-exercise activity thermogenesis — and in metabolic adaptation, two processes that quietly work against continued weight loss.

What is NEAT?

NEAT is the energy you burn through all daily movement that is not deliberate exercise: walking to the car, fidgeting, standing, housework, climbing stairs. It varies enormously between people — up to 1,000+ kcal/day difference between the most and least fidgety individuals of similar size. That variation is one reason two people on the "same diet" can have very different results.

Why NEAT drops when you diet

Research (notably from James Levine's group at Mayo Clinic) shows that when people cut calories, NEAT tends to decrease — often unconsciously. You sit a little more, fidget less, take the elevator instead of the stairs. This "energy-saving" response is one component of metabolic adaptation: the body defending its weight by reducing energy expenditure beyond what the smaller body mass alone would predict. Combined with a small drop in resting metabolic rate and the thermic effect of food, total daily expenditure can fall substantially below what your original calorie target assumed.
