Rather than a single blanket recommendation, the review pointed to specific volume and duration thresholds associated with better outcomes:
- Frequency: 2 sessions per week was the most common and effective protocol.
- Duration: programs lasting 6-12 weeks were studied, but those running 9 weeks or longer produced superior results.
- Total sessions: at least 16 total sessions for jump-height gains, and at least 18 total sessions for change-of-direction improvements.
- Volume: a minimum of 1,260 total ground contacts across the program was associated with meaningful adaptations.

Programming Safely
The review is a reminder that plyometrics is a dosed stimulus, not a one-size-fits-all drill. A few practical takeaways:
- Build volume gradually — jumping into high ground-contact totals without a base increases injury risk and undermines movement quality.
- Prioritize technique and landing mechanics over speed or height, especially early in a program.
- Balance training load with recovery; plyometric sessions are neuromuscularly demanding even when they don't feel like heavy lifting.
- If sprint speed is the main goal for adult athletes, favor plyometric exercises with short ground-contact times (e.g., ankle hops, low hurdle bounds) rather than high-amplitude jumps.
- Expect a slower, smaller response in adults compared with adolescents — this is normal and doesn't mean the program isn't working.
