For decades, coaches have debated which periodization model builds strength faster: linear periodization, where intensity climbs and volume drops in a straight line over weeks, or undulating (daily or weekly) periodization, where sets, reps, and load are cycled up and down within the same week. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) just weighed in with its first major resistance-training position stand update in 17 years, published March 16, 2026 in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, and the message is more nuanced — and more practical — than "one model wins."

Linear vs. undulating, defined

Linear periodization moves through distinct blocks: higher volume and lower intensity early on, tapering toward lower volume and higher intensity as a program progresses. Undulating periodization instead varies intensity and volume from session to session or week to week — for example, alternating a heavy-low-rep day with a moderate and a lighter, higher-rep day within the same training week — to keep the body adapting to different stimuli in parallel rather than in sequence.

What the new ACSM position stand found

Built from 137 systematic reviews covering more than 30,000 participants and graded using the GRADE framework, the new ACSM overview concluded that "complex periodization did not consistently outperform straightforward progressive overload" for the average healthy adult. In other words, once total volume and progressive load are accounted for, neither linear nor undulating periodization reliably beats a simpler program of steadily adding weight or reps over time.

That doesn't mean periodization is worthless — ACSM still frames it as a useful organizational tool for managing fatigue and keeping training varied — but it is no longer treated as a "load-bearing" variable that guarantees better strength outcomes on its own. What head-to-head comparisons show

A separate 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Zhang and colleagues, pooling 29 studies and 704 participants, directly compared linear and undulating periodization on strength and health outcomes. It found that the two models "had similar effects on improving athletic capacity, improving body composition, and regulating blood glucose and insulin resistance." Upper- and lower-body strength gains were comparable between approaches regardless of age, sex, or training experience. The main differences showed up elsewhere: undulating periodization edged out linear periodization for short-term weight loss (under 8 weeks) and lean-mass gains in people with obesity, while linear periodization performed slightly better for long-term weight management (beyond 14 weeks).
