"Visualize the lift before you do it" has long been gym folklore. A large 2025 meta-analysis gives that advice real scientific backing.

What the meta-analysis covered

Researchers pooled 86 studies covering 3,593 athletes (2,104 men and 1,110 women) to quantify how imagery practice — mentally rehearsing a movement without performing it — affects athletic performance. The effects were strongest for agility, muscular strength, and sport-specific skills in disciplines like tennis and soccer.

The strength numbers are striking

Athletes who combined mental imagery with actual resistance training increased their one-rep max by up to 27%, compared with 15–16% gains in groups that trained physically only. Even more remarkable, participants who purely imagined finger or biceps contractions — without moving a muscle — increased strength by up to 35% in some trials. Researchers attribute these gains to enhanced neural drive from brain to muscle, not to muscle tissue growth.

How much imagery practice is enough

The evidence points to a practical dose: roughly 10 minutes of imagery practice, three times per week, sustained over about 100 days, produced the strongest performance gains. Internal, first-person imagery — mentally "feeling" the lift from inside your own body — outperformed watching the movement as an external observer.
