Intermittent Fasting and Athletic Performance: What Recent Research Really Shows
Intermittent fasting (IF) — especially 16:8, where you confine eating to an 8-hour window — has become one of the most popular nutrition strategies among people who train regularly. But does time-restricted eating help, hurt, or simply not matter for strength, endurance, and body composition? A recent systematic review and meta-analysis in Nutrients, published June 2025, pooled data from 35 randomized controlled trials and 1,266 participants (intervention lengths from 4 to 52 weeks) to answer exactly that question.
What the meta-analysis found
- Handgrip strength increased significantly in IF/calorie-restriction groups compared with exercise alone (+1.707 kg, p = 0.01).

The authors' conclusion: intermittent fasting and calorie restriction "can be effectively integrated into exercise training without negatively impacting most measures of physical performance." Strength, power, and aerobic capacity were essentially preserved — but the average loss of 1.65 kg of fat-free mass alongside fat loss is a real trade-off worth planning around, especially for athletes trying to build or protect muscle.

- Because IF didn't hurt VO₂max, bench press, leg press, or jump performance on average, a 16:8 schedule is unlikely to sabotage a typical training session — but individual response varies, especially for high-intensity or long-duration sessions done in a fully fasted state.
- Scheduling the hardest sessions (heavy lifting, intervals) near the end of the fasting window or early in the eating window can reduce perceived fatigue for people sensitive to low blood glucose.
