Intermittent fasting (IF) — especially 16:8, where you confine eating to an 8-hour window — has become one of the most popular nutrition strategies among people who train regularly. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis in Nutrients, published June 2025, pooled data from 35 randomized controlled trials and 1,266 participants (intervention lengths from 4 to 52 weeks) to answer exactly that question.

What the meta-analysis found

The authors' conclusion: intermittent fasting and calorie restriction "can be effectively integrated into exercise training without negatively impacting most measures of physical performance." Strength, power, and aerobic capacity were essentially preserved — but the average loss of 1.65 kg of fat-free mass alongside fat loss is a real trade-off worth planning around, especially for athletes trying to build or protect muscle.
