Glutamine's role as a general immune-boosting supplement for endurance athletes is not well supported by current trial data — leukocyte counts, lymphocyte counts, and VO2max don't reliably improve with supplementation. Its most defensible use is more targeted: supporting gut integrity during heat stress or ultra-endurance efforts, rather than as a routine post-race illness prevention strategy. Adequate carbohydrate, sleep, and training-load management remain the strongest evidence-based tools for protecting immune function around hard training blocks.
